In February 2007, the government updated the Canadian Food Guide after 40 years. It’s no secret that whole foods, slow foods (as opposed to fast foods) and natural foods are much better options if you want to maintain optimal health. But if you are still uncertain how to integrate better quality foods in your diet in a way that’s easy and convenient, you may want to take a cue from cookbook author Heidi Swanson. In her new book, Super Natural Cooking: Five Delicious Ways to Incorporate Whole & Natural Ingredients Into Your Cooking, Swanson shows us how to use a palette of natural ingredients (now widely available in most Canadian supermarkets) to create delicious recipes that are nutritionally packed, gratifying and flavourful. Don’t worry if you are constantly double-booking yourself, because many recipes are very fast and easy to make. Via her weeknight-friendly dishes, Swanson teaches home cooks how to become confident in a whole-foods kitchen by experimenting with alternative flours, good fats, whole and ancient grains, natural sweeteners, colourful phytonutrient-packed options and much more. You’ll find more than 80 recipes, a comprehensive pantry chapter, and 100 eye-catching full-colour photos.
Winner of the 2005 Webby Award for best personal website, Heidi Swanson’s recipe blog attracts close to 500,000 page views a month, making it one of the most widely read recipe journals online.
