Most Canadians have just finished celebrating Thanksgiving and most Americans still have a few weeks to go until they celebrate this holiday. A few weeks after that we jump into the countdown to a series of Christmas parties and what I call the season of uncontrollable eating and drinking.

A lot of you will simply postpone any weight loss goals until the New Year because what’s the point of trying to lose weight before the holiday season, right? Wrong! I’ve often talked about how it’s so important to make sure that you have a healthy body as you age because it’s far more than a vanity thing … it’s a health thing.

I love to feature stats because they often wake people up to reality. I just found these latest stats from America:

“According to the Center for Disease Control over 60 per cent of Americans are overweight, and over 30 per cent of Americans are obese.”

The rapidly rising rate of obesity is of great concern because obesity is a risk factor for several potentially fatal diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, stroke, hypertension, osteoarthritis, and some cancers.

Americans and Canadians (and the Brits) spend billions of dollars on healthcare and health research every year. It so happens also that North America and Britain also have some of the best medical schools in the world, which churn out some of the best trained doctors in the world.

So how then, did we end up on the verge of this healthcare epidemic?

My friend and colleague Dr. Jonny Bowden will be the first one to tell you it’s because modern medicine doesn’t recognize the influence the mind has on the body.

“Dr. Jonny” as we like to call him, is a maverick in his field and this is due in part to his unique training.
