Dermabrasion is a method where surgical scraping is used to help refinish the skin’s top layers through. This effective treatment softens the skin’s irregularities giving it a smoother appearance. Dermabrasion is most often used to improve the look of facial skin left scarred by accidents or previous surgery. This treatment is also used to smooth out fine facial wrinkles, such as those around the mouth and eyes. Dermabrasion is also a commonly used treatment to eliminate deep acne scars.
In essence a dermabrasion treatment works very much like a chemical peel (Alpha Hydroxy Acid, Phenol or Trichloroacetic Acid), both treatments remove top layers of skin to leave room for more youthful and healthier skin. The difference lays in the fact that with dermabrasion, surgical instruments remove the affected skin layers, while a chemical peel uses a caustic solution. The general rule seems to be that chemical peels are more often used to treat fine wrinkles, while dermabrasion is more commonly used for deeper imperfections such as severe acne scars.
Dermabrasion can enhance your appearance and give a more youthful glow. That said, dermabrasion like all other skin-resurfacing treatments will remove all scars and flaws or prevent aging (in fact NOTHING will prevent aging, but dermabrasion treatments help us hide certain signs of aging).
Who should consider dermabrasion?
Dermabrasion can benefit all skin types and all genders. Although after a certain age, we tend to heal at a much slower pace, more important factors to consider are your skin type, colouring, and medical history.
* Darker skin beauties may benefit from opting for a dermabrasion versus a chemical peel treatment when treating limited areas of the face. Compared to phenol acid or trichloroacetic acid, dermabrasion treatments are less likely to produce extreme changes and contrasts in skin colour. That said, in some cases, black skin, Asian skin, and other dark complexions have become permanently discoloured or even blotchy after a skin-refinishing treatment (your cosmetic doctor will advise you).
* Some people who often develop allergic rashes or other skin reactions and those who get frequent fever blisters or cold sores, may experience a flare-up during a dermabrasion treatment.
* Candidates with freckles should be aware that dermabrasion treatments may cause them to disappear in the treated area.
* Acne suffers should note that a reputable doctor or cosmetic surgeon will not perform a dermabrasion treatment during the active stages of acne because of a greater risk of infection.
* If you ever had any kind of radiation treatments, a bad skin burn, or a previous chemical peel, a reputable doctor or cosmetic surgeon will shy away from a dermabrasion treatment.
At the end of the day, your cosmetic doctor will be the one making the call when it comes to which times of rejuvenation treatments will be best suited to your anti-aging concerns.
