I strongly disagree with Nora Ephron’s “I Feel Bad about My Neck” book and her approach to aging!

After reading the post for Nora Ephron book: “I Feel Bad About My Neck: And Other Thoughts on Being a Woman” that exposes her views about aging, I knew I just had to ask my good friend Bonnie how she reacted to the book’s approach. You’ll find her response below!

Life is too precious to concentrate on what seems less than perfect and to miss out on recognizing the advantages and joys that aging bring. It isn’t sad to be over sixty. Aging is only one big descent if we make it so.
At 64, I feel life becomes more exciting each day. The secret is AgeEsteem: self esteem that embraces the positives of living fully at the age you are today, every day.

A step towards AgeEsteem is to acknowledge your age. Nora Ephron’s book does acknowledge some realities of aging. It’s true. My neck does look different and maybe not as pretty as it used to be. Having acknowledged that, I can choose to wear turtle neck sweaters and scarves to hide it, or show it off just the way it is. It is, after all, mine. Either way, I feel good about my neck. It holds my head high!

Let’s also acknowledge the savoir-faire and savoir-être that grows out of our experience of living. It is awesome to recognize the dimension of knowledge, understanding and experience we have gained just during the past year, whether we are 20 or 80.

Unlike Ephron, I believe that today is more wonderful than yesterday. I’ve learned how to do and I know how to be. I stand in my own power and no longer need to constantly prove myself. Today I can give myself permission to do what I choose. One of those choices is to decide how I want to age. Will I fight the process? No, I will embrace it and live each day to its fullest with AgeEsteem.
