My great designer buys on eBay and my misses from J.Crew

If you're new to Beauty Match, you may want to subscribe to our RSS feed. Don't miss a beauty beat by joining Beauty Match Insider. Thanks for visiting!

Armed with the retailer of choice for First Lady-elect Michelle Obama, I attempted to be more recession-smart and try my hand at shopping online for a few deals.

I hit two major online retailers: eBay and J.Crew. This was my first time buying anything from either retailer and my experience was vastly different from one retailer to the other.

I’m a fairly small dress size, BUT I have long legs, I’m tall, I have a small waist, and I have curves. This makes buying a bit of a nightmare in many cases because it’s quite rare that I can buy something without trying it and I have to try-try-and-try again before finding items that fit because designers cut clothes that fit women who are short and who have the same hip-to-waist ratio.

The Victoria Secret Fashion Show was spectacular!

WOW! What a show! W-H-A-T A S-H-O-W!!!

I had planned on watching 10 minutes of it, but ended up watching the full hour that ended thirty minutes ago because it was hard to do anything else.

The lingerie was very couture and the models were beautiful.

It hurts me to admit this, but Heidi Klum (mother of three and Seal’s wife) looks absolutely incredible.

Is it really possible to find stylish fashion and clothing for women with curves?

plus_size_woman

I really couldn’t resist featuring this Italian designer because she’s redefining how women with curves dress and how they see themselves!

It’s a sad reality that most stylish lines cap their sizes at about a size 12. It can be very frustrating and disappointing for women who are size 14 and up to find current, modern, stylist or sexy clothes to wear.

Italian designer Elena Mirò (how many times have I said that the best things in this world come from Italy!) celebrates plus size women by designing a line that is truly beautiful and sophisticated.

Why is elected-first Lady Michelle Obama’s style causing so many people to talk?

First it was the election-day dress designed by Narciso Rodriguez and then it was the $15,000 diamond chandelier like earrings … Michelle Obama, who is said not to have a stylist, is surely getting a lot of ink for her style.

I’ll be honest here and say that I didn’t like that dress she wore the night her husband was elected President and I didn’t like that dress when I saw it on a model during Narciso’s Spring 2009 fashion show in September. I just find that too much is happening at the waist area and I actually found the dress made First Lady elected Michelle Obama look wider than she is. In my view, the whole thing was very distracting and she’s had many other much better fashion days.

During her four years as the wife of the President of the US, Michelle Obama will no doubt have a chance to influence a lot of women in their fashion decision because she represents the average American women.

7 Post Obama-mania fashion reviews

obama fashionIt’s already rumoured that over 1 million Americans want to assist to the January 20th 2009 Obama inauguration where the president-elect will drop one word from his title and simply become THE PRESIDENT!

There is no doubt that the months leading to this historical event will give way to many new fashion trends (some good and some very-much forgettable), but I thought that now that all the anticipation of “will Sara Palin be able to represent America without being ridiculed or will Michelle Obama become the first African-American First Lady” are over, I would take a look back at some of the strongest fashion trends from this election.

Harper’s Bazaar Great Style Guide is worth buying

harpers_bazaar_great_style_guideIn recent years, I’d have to say that Bazaar has become my favourite fashion magazine. I’ve always loved their approach and they were the first to start featuring style tips for women in their 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s!

It’s not as sexy for most commercial outlets to feature women over 35 because so much is geared towards teenagers and young adults, but at the end of the day, the cash tills at most stores are ringing because women over 35 can afford more expensive fashion, accessories and skincare products.

Harper’s Bazaar Great Style book is not new … in fact, it came out last year, but since we are ready for a season transition, I thought it was important to go back to a solid reference guide that I personally think all women over 35 should own.

My Interview with THE Hermes Birkin Bag Expert

hermes_birkin_bagThose French women have it so easy with all those fabulous designer brands. If you’ve ever been to France you’ll notice that French women don’t dress the same way most North Americans dress. In France it’s about quality instead of quantity and when a French woman finds an item she loves and that fits properly … she won’t hesitate to buy it in every colour!

Another thing you’ll notice about French women is their love of exquisite accessories. The French bring attention to details like no other country. The artisans in France are still regarded as men and women who possess an exceptional talent.

I was quite sadden to find out that many artisans’ careers (in Europe at large) had fizzled and had been exported to China where savoir faire (know-how) was replaced by mass production. From conversations with insiders I found out that many brands were partially assembled in China and then returned to Europe to be finished and to be “stamped” made in Europe. One company that is still using a long traditional of artisans is Hermes.

Hermes is one of France’s most prestigious, luxurious and expensive brands and it’s also one of the brands that’s the most coveted by Hollywood celebrities and the rich and famous on the planet.

Le carré de soie (silk scarf) is the entry point at Hermes retailing usually at about $295-$400 (depending which country you buy it in). That said, THE item that cannot seem to remain on the shelves for very long it the Birkin handbag.

Dressing for less when the economy is challenging

As I alluded in my previous post, this new economy of foreclosures and mortgage fiasco has left a lot of women with less disposable income than at any other time since the beginning of this new century.

From Canada, to the US, to the U.K., to India and even China, consumer spending has gone way down because people are quite concerned about how well they’ll be able to juggle all this financial and economical uncertainty.
