Fall 2009 Fashion Trends

Jimmy Choo will be designing an entire collection for H&M! This collection is set to hit stores on November 14 and it will be a mad zoo. Jimmy Choo shoes are even quite pricey on sale, so you know this (affordable) partnership with H&M will make a lot of women lose it completely. I can already see the headlines and the line-up of women who will be camping in front of H&M stores for days in order to get their hands on at least of pair of affordable Jimmy Choo shoes! I saw a few of the styles that Jimmy Choo designers have created for H&M and it will be madness on November 14 around the world with women fighting to get their hands on sexy-stilettos.

>>>> Highlights from Fall 2009 International Runway Shows!

Since the Fall 2009 Fashions shows took place earlier this year as most of us watched out retirement savings and other investment dwindle to dismal numbers, I decided not to go to any of the international fashion shows because I just really could see myself forking that kind of money without any assurance of what the future would bring.

The recent financial crisis has had a huge impact on the fashion industry. For the past two collections (fall 2009 and spring/summer 2010, many designers have trimmed down their shows to cut costs as much as possible. Many fashion houses find themselves in limbo and a lot of them have already declared bankruptcy.

The fashion magazine world has also been dramatically affected because they now have less ad money and as a result many of my 2009 fashion magazines have been slimmer than ever. Even the colossal September issues which are usually as thick as a phone book have trimmed down substantially. Another sign of the times is the fact that most fashion magazine have been featuring “budget buys”. By that I mean that magazines like Bazaar have been dressing their super-skinny models with fashion pieces that are actually affordable. I’ve been seeing clothing priced in the $200-$600 price range in Bazaar. Yes, I do recognize that for many that’s still high, but the reality is that until the financial crisis the only thing you could find in Bazaar that cost $200-$600  were sun glasses, scarves and skincare.

After attending a fashion show for the current collection of Mocha Design, I was so compelled to create this video which is followed by a slide show because I was dazzled!

These evening and wedding dresses are the latest collection by designer Vivienne Dacosta from Mocha Designs and the wedding hair styles are from Michelle at Atlanta Hair Designs!

CoverGirl offers beauty for less!

covergirl_outlast_lipstain_line-upcovergirl_lashblast_mascaracovergirl-olay-simply-ageless-foundation-ellen-degeneres

Not long ago I had written a post giving a list of 10 beauty products under $10 after watching Barbara Walters’ make-up artist (Lori Klein) on “The View” do a feature on “beauty during the recession”.

You’ll notice that Lori Klein had also picked CoverGirl Lash Blast as one of her selections for a great mascara under $10 and to be honest everyone women I know loves this mascara.

It’s a best-seller in the U.S. and the #1 best-selling mascara in Canada and it’s UNDER $10!

Sassy fashion styles in your 60s

su_pollard_style_in_your_60sWhat a difference an outfit can make! This is so much truer as you age because if you wear the wrong type of clothing for your body shape and your age … it’s just not to your advantage.

I love the Baby Boomer generation because by the time I reach my 60s no one will be calling me a “senior citizen”.  With all the sassy ladies in their 60s, it’s obvious that we’re certainly not aging like our parents and grandparents.

After reading this incredible feature in Daily Mail (one of my favourite online newspapers from the U.K.), I thought to myself “Bravo!” for showing a real woman (as opposed to a celebrity) in their 60s how to dress in a fun, sassy and sexy way. The idea here is not to look 20 again, but rather to look like the best version of yourself at this point in your life.

Daily Mail worked with Su Pollard to help her change her ways. Pollard who turned 60 last November 2008 could be seen prancing about town in miniskirts, colourful mesh tights and bright citrus leggings (Dios mio, what a disaster). The look was more costume-like than anything else and it did nothing at all for her. To be quite honest, she looked a bit frazzled in that outfit.

Thankfully she was open and listened to British fashion expert Nicky Hambleton-Jones and together they created a sensational look that was featured in the British magazine Reveal.

Coco Chanel Movie with Audrey Tautou

coco_chanel_coco_avant_chanelI cannot wait for the movie “Coco avant Chanel” (translates to “Coco before Chanel”). It just premiered in France on April 22 and I cannot wait for it to come to North America!

The film that brings fashion’s famous Mademoiselle Coco Chanel to life, thanks to the French actress Audrey Tautou, will surely be a huge hit with fashion and beauty bloggers.

Audrey Tautou looks the part and if her acting is as convincing as her previous roles, then this will be quite the movie.

It’s interesting, but I’d say that Coco Chanel might be one of those rare international figures who requires no introduction and no history. Everyone on the planet knows her work and has been exposed to her creative genius in one way or another (even if it’s just from the pages of fashion magazines).

I’m QUITE partial to Chanel accessories and I’m still hoping to one day buy one of those signature Chanel handbags and I’d surely never say no to one of those signature jackets (not the suit … just the jacket), but for now, I’ll be content sitting in a movie theatre and soaking in the beautiful images of the upcoming “Coco avant Chanel”!

Michelle Obama Fashion Look Book recap

michelle_obama_vogue_march_20091Have you noticed that Michelle Obama has not been in the news now since she got back from her first European visit in April?

Her fashion choices delighted a number of people, but not everyone. I liked a few things she chose, but I wasn’t thrilled with everything and I will say this: a cardigan to meet the Queen??? I don’t think I would have gone that fashion route.

I agonized for hours trying to figure out what to wear when I met Candace Bushnell (author of Sex and the City, Lipstick Jungle and One Fifth Avenue) last year, so you know I’d be thinking about my fashion choices to meet the Queen for weeks in advance.

Here’s my post on meeting Candace Bushnell: Meeting Candace Bushnell author of Sex and the City

I did agree with Oscar de la Renta’s comment (which he later took back on the set of “The View”) where he (allegedly) says that Michelle Obama should have considered adding some well known American designers to her list of fashion selections.

80s shoulder pads are back for spring 2009!

80s_shoulder_pads_back_spring_2009_fashion_trend

I’ve been fighting with my Russian seamstress for a while now about a designer leather jacket (it’s a beautiful midnight blue designed by Canadian designer Izzy Camilleri) I bought a few years ago. I kept going back to my seamstress asking her to reduce the shoulder pads and she kept saying that it was sewn in a way that prevented her from changing the construction on the shoulder pads and replacing them with smaller ones.

A few weeks ago, I went back to Masha to alter a few pieces and I attempted again to get the leather jacket fixed (I was hoping that maybe she might have forgotten that I had asked this before) and she said NO again and said: “shoulder pads are now back in fashion” and Masha was right!

Michelle Obama’s 10 style commandments according to L’Express

Well everyone knows that First Lady Michelle Obama’s style has been the subject of a lot of conversations lately because the recent G-20 was a really fashion show in many ways. Indeed, the whole point of the top 20 leaders of the democratic world meeting for a few days in London was to talk about ways of improving the crumbling international economy. But, let’s face it, you could NOT open a newspaper or read a web site without hearing about “Michelle Obama’s fashion” … even CNN joined in and had daily fashion-flashes of the First Ladies designer  choices.

I know I might be a tad bit controversial here because contrarily to so many people I’m not always taken by Michelle Obama’s fashion sense and in some case I cringe when I see her choices. I still cannot believe the Isabelle Toledo lime green inaugural ensemble paired with forest green kitten heels. In my book, that was wrong-wrong-wrong.

Here’s also where I diverge from a lot of people: I say STOP comparing Michelle Obama to Jacqueline Onasis Kennedy – PLEASE STOP! They have distinct styles of their own and there have been forty years of fashion between the two First Ladies.
