New Year, new look?

Every year we make resolutions that for some reason or another doesn’t always pan out. One move could be to try out a new short hair do for the coming year.

If you don’t like it, well you could also grow it back out or if you can’t wait that long, grab some hair extensions to change up your look. Female Hollywood celebrities do it, why can’t you?

On camera she’s always portraying a girly-girl … especially in her role as “Sabrina” alongside Harrison Ford, but in real life Julia Ormond is a self-proclaimed tomboy who is more comfortable in jeans and a T-shirt than in a gown.

I’m terribly sorry for being a few days late on this monumental news, but the month of September has turned out to be one of the busiest and most hectic months on record.

I’m not complaining, because it’s all positive stuff, but it also means that I’ve not been able to post this last week as I had planned to do … as they say better late than never.

If you’ve not yet heard, Procter & Gamble has signed daytime TV host and Emmy-award winner Ellen DeGeneres to become the new face of CoverGirl makeup (her campaigns will be seen as of January 2009).

All week, Ellen’s guests have congratulating her on this major accomplishment. I personally LOVED when Benjamin Bratt (star one of my new favourite series called “The Cleaner”) said to Ellen: “You know what? You’ve got CoverGirl eyes” … I equally liked the way Ellen blushed!

I’d say, say that 2008 is Ellen’s year: she turned 50, she got married to the love of her life and now she’s the face of CoverGirl!

I personally congratulate P & G for daring to make a woman in her 50s the new face of their cosmetic brand.

I’ve always liked Ellen because truth be told, she makes me laugh and when days are crazy and I feel like the weight of my day is as heavy as an African elephant, I know that a few minutes of Ellen will lighten things up and often make me smile.

Ellen is surely not your ordinary cover model … she’s got nothing remotely similar to past models or other actresses who are becoming more readily the face of major cosmetic companies, but the one thing Ellen has is a legion of female fans who will be too happy to take her cue and run out and try CoverGirl’s latest collections (which are quite fantastic … stay tuned for some incredible looks from CoverGirl in the next few weeks!).

If P & G was trying to find a face to get other women to take note … what a coup by choosing Ellen!

I personally think that at 50, Ellen looks incredible and it’s obvious from her slim figure that she takes care of her body. She’s a natural beauty and she’s always been true to herself and has never really tried to be anything other than Ellen … it’s the kind of confidence that you’ve got to admire in a girl.

The other day I was watching a show called “Vanity Insanity”.

The new generation of plastic-surgery-TV-shows does more than just point the finger at which celebrity got some work done and which didn’t.

These shows actually give celebrity beauty tips that allows the “normal” person to get ideas of what is possible in the world of cosmetic enhancement and in many cases they are also a good platform to warn the public of what excessive plastic surgery can look like (think of the cat lady).

Just in case, you’ve never seen the cat lady, aka Jocelyn Wildenstein, I’ve included a photo of her below (she insisted on getting surgery to look like a cat):

I found three two quotes by three very different Hollywood celebrities and I think their views sum up nicely how certain stars few cosmetic enhancement. In many ways, these opposite views are very reflective of what happens in real life. If you were to ask people around you how they viewed plastic surgery as they age, you’d most like find yourself with a group of people saying “yes”, others will say “never in a million years” and then you have the camp that will say “maybe … if I see I need it in time”.

Some might argue that Shania is not truly country, but one thing for sure is that this Canadian from Timmins, Ont. has opened the door to allow a lot of non-country music lovers to actually appreciate it.

I won’t go into details on Shania’s groundbreaking career that includes over 75 million country albums sold worldwide (including 48 million sold in the U.S. alone), countless awards and critical acclaim, but I will say that Shania (42, born in August 1965) has broken some major records.

“Help I can’t move my face!” … that was the headline that caught my eye.

Radar Magazine recently published an article on Hollywood celebs who were taking cosmetic rejuvenation and plastic surgery to extremes.

The cover features a Nicole Kidman-like Barbie doll in a couture evening gown with a frozen expression on her face. For years now, there has been debate over the fact that perhaps Nicole’s perfect alabaster skin might not be simply attributed to her Irish ancestors, but to a few trips to her favourite cosmetic dermatologist or plastic surgeon. It’s obvious that Nicole has denied that she’s had any work done … leaving the door wide open for public interpretation (i.e.: she’s lucky to be aging so well).

For this revealing interview, Radar Magazine got the scoop from Hollywood insiders like casting directors and A-list doctors.

A few other celebs that appear on the list of “did they do it?” includes Meg Ryan, Demi Moore, Angelina Jolie, Jessica Simpson, Kenny Rodgers, Cher, Kate Jackson (original Charlie Angel) and Mickey Rourke.

One of the most interesting angles about this article is the fact it explores the cost of seeking perfection in Hollywood. They highlight the fact that Meg Ryan’s career took a serious nosedive after she had some lip enhancement. Really, Meg Ryan was one of the top actresses in Hollywood a decade ago and we’ve not seen her at all in any recent successful flicks.

One of the worst career moves has got to be Jennifer Grey going under the knife. Grey played Baby in “Dirty Dancing”. She hated her nose so much that she got an operation that radically transformed her face … to the point where no one recognized her and casting directors turned her away because they WANTED to see the same woman who helped make that movie such a smashing hit.

Parting notes: It’s true that most of us don’t rub shoulders with the Hollywood celebs and might not have the type of pressures they do to look perfect all the time. That said, I’ve noticed a number of women who sometimes get too much injections instead of looking “younger”. It’s really hard not to miss it because there’s something very unnatural about the way they look.

From my numerous interviews and discussions with some of the top cosmetic dermatologists and plastic surgeons, the key is to look like a “fresher” version of yourself and not like someone else. To achieve that … it’s a fine balance in the art of not giving into excess.
