vanessa_williams

I will preface this post by saying that all that I’m about to write is based on rumour of course because we all know that in Hollywood no one has a cosmetic doctor on speed dial!

That said, there are some celebs who openly admit to having a bit of help in keeping their youthful look.

It’s a dog-eat-dog-world in Hollywood and I may be all philosophical about aging and I may spend a lot of time on my site pushing the virtues of aging well, but then again I do not make my living in front of the camera.

I will openly admit to my readers that I’ve never had any nip, tuck or injections done not because I’m opposed to the idea or feel that I want to age gracefully, but simply because I don’t feel I need it. As long as I keep looking much younger than my real age … then I’ll only be visiting my cosmetic doctor to help me deal with my acne scars.

If all of a sudden I found myself hosting Beauty Match TV as a real TV show and if I had to see myself on a 50′ inch flat screen HDTV, perhaps I too might be begging my cosmetic doctor for injection fillers and Botox CosmeticTM.

You have celebrities such as Angelica Houston and Joan Collins who have tried Botox once or twice and didn’t like the experience and then you have socialites such as Ivana Trump who dodges the question all together when it’s clear she was NOT born with the face she currently has because a) she’s looking a lot like Joan Rivers these days b) no one is born (or ages) with a face that puffy!

Let’s not forget Nicole Kidman who conveniently keeps her lips shut when it comes to admitting or denying her obvious overindulgence in Botox injections!

Then you have stars like Patricia Heaton from the sitcom Everyone Loves Raymond (51, born March 4, 1958) and Sharon Osborne (56, born October 9, 1952) who are very open about their plastic surgeries and the injections they get on a regular basis to keep a youthful appearance on camera. The thing with those two stars is that they still look quite natural and do NOT frighten small children like Joan Rivers does.

There are a number of Hollywood actresses who have come clean about their use of injections:

1) Lisa Rinna (45, born July 11, 1963): we had featured Lisa on the site and you can read her take on the beauty industry here: Does Lisa Rinna regret her plastic surgery enhancements?

lisa rinna botox plastic surgery

2) Linda Evangelista (43, born May 10, 1965): This Canadian supermodel is not shy in admitting that it’s not only her Italian good genes helping her age well.

You can read more on Linda Evangelista here: A Canadian supermodel is redefining beauty in her forties

linda_evangelista

3) Jenny McCarthy (36, born November 1, 1972): Jenny has always been extremely outspoken so it’s no surprise she feels comfortable sharing with the public that when it comes to remaining wrinkle-free … she’s getting some help from her cosmetic surgeon!

jenny_mccarthy

4) Daisy Fuentes (42, born November 17, 1966): The Cuban beauty is not shy in admitting that as she ages, she thinks that a little Botox is not such a bad thing.

daisy_fuentes

5) Jennie Garth (37, born April 3, 1972): Perhaps having to be surrounded by 20-something girls on the set of the new 90210 series has prompted Jennie to seek the help of a cosmetic doctor to help her look as young as the other cast members on the show!

jennie_garth

6) Vanessa Williams (46, born March 18, 1963): With each new season change, Vanessa Williams makes a trip to her cosmetic doctor to get some Botox injections! The villainess of the now defunct Ugly Betty show is not leaving it to chances when it comes to controlling how she looks as she ages.

vanessa_williams

7) Kelly Ripa (38, born October 2, 1970): She got her Botox injections live on the Regis and Kelly Show!

kelly_ripa

#8) Virginia Madsen (47, born September 11, 1961): Virginia became the spokesperson for Allergan the maker of Botox CosmeticTM to let women know that Botox CAN actually look very natural when it’s well done and you don’t have to scare young children with a frozen looking face.

I’d love to put all the stars from “Desperate Housewives” on this list, but then it would fall under the “rumour” category since lips are sealed on the set of Wisteria Lane on the subject of beauty injections … even when foreheads aren’t moving and lips seem to be getting plumper with each new episode!

At least I’m happy to see that the “REAL Housewives of Orange County” aren’t shy one bit in not only admitting to their love of all things relating to beauty injections, but they even let the cameras on their little beauty escapades!

Can someone explain to me how Demi Moore can STILL keep looking as beautiful as she does? I mean she looks just ravishingly stunning every time I see her. She looked incredible at the 66th Golden Globe Award, didn’t she?

As I was working on the post on Madonna’s fitness secrets, I saw a story on Demi and her 30-year-old husband and I just had to click on the link and once AGAIN there she was looking incredible on this press photo.

I mean, what is it … good genes … a great glam squad (fitness and beauty experts who work with her) … or simply the fact that she’s married to a man who is 16 years younger than she is (maybe that’s what’s missing in my life)?

One thing is certain and that’s the fact that Demi Moore makes 46 look damn-hot!

I think my favourite thing about Demi Moore is the fact that she always chooses very sophisticated, yet sexy looks.

Contrarily to women like Pamela Anderson (41, born July 1st, 1967) and Courtney Love (44, born July 9, 1964) who are also in their 40s and who seem to think that a-lot-of-skin-is-still-in, Demi adopts a more elegant look that makes men of all ages drool!

Here’s the photo that sparked this short banter. I saw it yet again on the Daily Mail site (you’ll see her wide smile … it’s like she’s saying to the world “I’ve got it all and I know it” … lucky gal!: No wonder he’s smiling… Demi Moore, 46, looks younger than her boytoy husband Ashton.

Here’s a photo of Demi Moore at the 66th Golden Globe Awards (look at that dress and the jewellery!)

Here’s a clip of Demi’s movie “Flawless” with Michael Caine:

Demi Moore on the David Letterman show is an amazing red dress (even David admits that she looks better now than she did when she was younger):

I had written a post on Demi and her husband’s new “I Pledge” video to respond to President Obama’s call to action. You can catch it here: Have you seen Demi Moore’s and Ashton Kutcher’s I Pledge Video?

I was surfing old archive of Yahoo’s OMG when I found Lisa Rinna’s feature. What stopped me dead in my tracks was the title: “I Look Like a Freak” After Too Much Plastic Surgery”.

You won’t hear too many Hollywood celebrities admitting to too much Botox Cosmetics® or having had too many shots of injection fillers.

The former “Dancing with the Stars” contestant admits that she’s had her cheeks enhanced with injections of Juvederm® and she admits that she might have gone overboard (I totally agree)!

It’s interesting because Lisa (45, born July 11, 1963) admits that she was influenced by one of her girlfriends when she decided to explore this cosmetic enhancement avenue.

I wasn’t too partial one way or another to Lisa Rinna, but reading her comments about how she looks post-Juvederm injections really made my eyebrows arch with respect, because I couldn’t believe that she was willing to be that honest with her cosmetic enhancement experience.

I think it’s safe to say that soooooooooooooooooo many female Hollywood celebrities over 35 and pretty much all of them over 40 are really dipping with no shame in the cosmetic-enhancement-promised-potion-of-eternal-youth, but for so many, it just looks wrong … and the minute we seem them … we know that the starlet in question got some work done.

“I had Juvederm put in my cheeks. That’s what I overdid — big time. I tried it because my girlfriends did it. I thought, I’ll do it! I saw a photo and I was like, Oh Jesus. That’s no good. That’s NOT good. When you change your face, you don’t look like yourself. Looking fresher is one thing. I look like a freak! I always said I wouldn’t change my face, but I did it.”

“I can’t not be honest about it. I’d look like a fool. It’s so obvious. But when this happened, I realized I couldn’t hide it.” — Lisa Rinna in an interview with momlogic.com

It’s interesting because when it comes to non-surgical cosmetic enhancement, less is best!

I see everyday women all the time who blatantly look like they have work done and in my opinion, it doesn’t make them look any younger … it simply makes them look like they have a cosmetic doctor on speed dial on their Apple iPhone!

Lisa Rinna, admits that although she’s given up Juvederm, she’s still happy about her Botox injections because she doesn’t feel that it changes the shape of your face.

I’ve only met one cosmetic doctor to date who had a face full of Botox and injections, but who looked sooooooo incredibly natural that I felt bold enough to stand only inches away from her face to take a good look. She’s said to me that the key with cosmetic enhancement is to look fresher and not like someone else.

I think that Lisa Rinna has also come to the same conclusion:

“You get older and insecure and you think you need it, and you don’t,” she says. “I learned less is more. Keep your skin good.”

Every makeup artist I’ve ever interviewed has also confirmed that the best thing women can do for themselves as they get older is to make sure they have the best quality skin possible and to really focus on that … and everything else falls in place. And if you feel the need for a little extra help … make sure you don’t overdo it!

On January 5th, 2009 Queen Oprah will launch a new segment called “Your Best Life” and she’ll explore weight, health, spirituality, money and sex. I have no doubt that we’ll be greeted by some of her favourite experts like Dr. Mehmet Oz.

For her weight segment, I’m sure the hot topic du jour is her recent admission that she’s gained a staggering 40 lbs!

In 2005, Oprah weighed a slim 160 lbs, but she’s gained a lot of weight and now she’s going to invite all of America (and the world) go get back on the program after they’ve “fallen off of the wagon” like she has.

Oprah on the cover of O magazine at 160 lbs:

o_magazine_oprah_160lbs

I find it quite revealing when Oprah admitted not to have shown her body on the cover of her famous O magazine for an entire year. She’s admitted to concealing the weight gain by avoiding any full body shots. I have to say that it worked because it never really hit me that she had gained weight until early November 2008. I was watching Oprah’s show with Nicole Kidman where both were sitting on a replicated set of the movie Australia. I remember thinking “something has changed” when Oprah got up to greet Nicole and when they sat, I thought to myself “her lower body looked so much wider than before”. I dismissed the thought since I watch the show very infrequently … I thought it was just me.

Last week, when Oprah started announcing her “Your Best Life” show, she started openly admitting to a recent weight gain and TMZ decided that segment was “news” … that’s when I got confirmation of my suspicions. That said, I had no idea it was a weight gain of 40 lbs.

We’ve all been there … we’ve all gained weight and gone to an event where we had not seen some friends or acquaintances for a long time and you know that look people give you when your body has changed. Now we’re talking about two or three people, imagine having millions upon millions of people noticing your weight gain and talking about it!

Many TV shows who have featured Oprah’s new weight gain have talked about an interesting topic that Oprah has mentioned a number of times on her show: self-sabotage.

In past shows Oprah has admitted to questioning God about “why she was the chosen one … why did she has that much power … why did she has that much success … why she has that much money” … the answer to her recent weight gain might be her way of “having a life that’s not so perfect”.

Oprah’s weight gain might be a little bit more complicated than just will power (although she’s admitted to not exercising regularly and eating “bad” foods). She’s battled in the last year with health issues and she’s also dealing with a thyroid condition that slows down her metabolism and makes weight control a bit more challenging.

It will be interesting to see how Oprah takes her own life experience and turns it around into a discussion platform for her followers who have lost track of their own goals.

I think Oprah’s story is quite revealing because she has access to some of the best personal chefs and personal trainers money can buy.

I also know from Oprah’s own account that she’s been actively calorie-counting to maintain her weight (which I personally don’t believe works at all) and she’s also admitted to completely cutting out white carbs and white starches like potatoes, white bread, white pasta and white rice.

When I hear things like that it always ring a bell of alarm because cutting anything out in such a dramatic way usually means that you will balloon the second you eat a bit of that “forbidden” food. I also always like to go back to my countries of reference – Italy and France. Imagine if both countries cut out bread, pastries, rice, potato dishes, pasta or gnocchi (in Italy)? French and Italian women indulge with moderation in all those foods and they remain thin and slim.

I’ll be watching Oprah’s Best Life Week and I’ll be reporting back my thoughts.

Here’s is an exurb from O magazine of Oprah’s explanation about her weight gain:

“In 1992 I reached my heaviest, 237 pounds. I was 38. Then, four years ago, I made it a goal to lose weight, and I appeared on the January 2005 cover (left) at a toned 160 pounds. I thought I was finished with the weight battle. I was done. I’d conquered it. I was so sure, I was even cocky. I had the nerve to say to friends who were struggling, “All you have to do is work out harder and eat less! Get your 10,000 steps in! None of that starchy stuff!”

Bam! Karma is a bear of a thing.

So here I stand, 40 pounds heavier than I was in 2006. (Yes, you’re adding correctly; that means the dreaded 2-0-0.) I’m mad at myself. I’m embarrassed. I can’t believe that after all these years, all the things I know how to do, I’m still talking about my weight. I look at my thinner self and think, “How did I let this happen again?”

It happened slowly. In February 2007, at 53, I started to have some health issues. At first I was unable to sleep for days. My legs started swelling. My weight started creeping up, first 5 pounds, then 10 pounds. I was lethargic and irritable. My internal clock seemed totally out of whack. I began having rushing heart palpitations every time I worked out. Okay, I’ve never loved daily exercise, but this was different. I actually developed a fear of working out. I was scared that I would pass out. Or worse. I felt as if I didn’t know my own body anymore.”

It’s true that nothing from Hollywood would surprise me anymore. I surely know that after reviewing the “baby food diet” in my last post from my new favourite British series on weight and diet “SuperSize vs SuperSkinny”, anything goes in Hollywood when it comes to staying as slim as possible in front of the camera.

It’s true that it’s easy for me to judge since I don’t have agonize over the fact that most people in North America are watching HDTV now, which is unkind to any signs of aging or “imperfections”, but it’s still mind-blowing to hear how many celebs under-eat and how many women avoid carbs.

Not long ago, Shenae Grimes (19) and Jessica Stroup (22) of “90210″ (the new series) were severely criticized by the media for being too skinny and it seems that both actresses lost as much as 30 pounds from just a few short years ago. I have to say that the cover shot that appear on OK! Magazine showed two very frail and skinny girls. The September cover caused another stir in Hollywood about women and the pressure they feel to be mega-skinny … one male co-star of “Gossip Girl” went on camera and suggested these superskinny “90210″ actresses needed eat a cheeseburger or two.

The reality is that under-eating in Hollywood affects women of ALL ages.

I recently found out that Dana Delany (who I think looks stunning and quite sexy at 52) went on record to say that she doesn’t worry at all about staying thin because she has no intentions on spending part of her life obsessing over her weight.

In recent interviews Dana admitted that just after joining the cast for the fourth season of “Desperate Housewives”, one wardrobe designer took her aside and pleaded with her not to fall into the ‘Desperate Housewives Disease’ trap. It seems that each actress who has joined the ABC Sunday night smash show suddenly dramatically loses weight … even the younger actresses have been known to drop as much as 10 pounds after joining the cast. Dana reportedly said that “there is an unspoken competition weight loss thing”.

Delany might in fact have taken that advice that was given to her in confidence, since she’s actually put on weight since starting the series. I know the camera automatically adds 10 pounds, but from the few times I’ve watched the latest episodes of Desperate Housewives … I can say that Dana Delany looks superb and I’m quite happy she’s keeping a healthy view of her body and weight.
