You may be shaking your head now in surrender, placing your stretch marks problem as something inevitable, just a small price to pay in having such a wonderful baby.

True, most women develop pregnancy stretch marks, particularly during the later stages of gestation, where the rapid increase in the growing baby bump and the additional weight gain stretch the skin to its limits, but it does not mean you have to live with them even after delivery!

They are common during pregnancy because the skin tissues break, apart from that, these skin changes may also occur because of hormonal changes and scratching. Usually these marks would pepper your abdomen but it can also appear in other areas where weight gain may be more noticeable than others such as the upper arms, breasts, hips, buttocks, thighs, and legs.

No pain = extra gain when it comes to cosmetic rejuvenation

injection_lips
Since I’m on the topic of plastic surgery, I thought I’d touch on an important point.

Most people are fully aware that if they get surgery and they feel post-surgical pain or discomfort they should run (not walk) to their doctor’s office. Well, this also applies to non-cosmetic rejuvenation.

Since when you undergo non-cosmetic rejuvenation treatments, you are usually awake, you know fairly quickly if something is burning and feeling particularly painful.

Fighting fine lines in your 40s, 50s and 60s

l_oreal_paris_collagen_remodeler_countouring_moisturizer
I’m a big magazine junkie and I have to admit that Harper’s Bazaar might be my favourite. I equally like the British and the American edition.

Bazaar was the first one to break down style and beauty tips for women in their 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s and YES – 70s! I know for me it was very inspiring to see that such a prestigious magazine would recognize that women in their 40s, 50s, 60s and YES 70s do still want to look attractive and they are still very much open to tips and tricks.

A few editions ago, Bazaar featured some products they considered to be essentials for women in their 40s, 50s and 60s.

I don’t agree with Paula Begoun author of Don’t Go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me

beautiful_eyes.jpg

I was watching Marilyn Denis’ CityLine show on City TV (on Wednesday, Mars 19) when I noticed Paula Begoun as the guest expert promoting the newest edition of her book “Don’t Go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me”.

One thing that I quite like about Paula Begoun is the fact that she features lower priced products that are comparable to higher priced skincare or makeup products. Not everyone can afford higher priced products and let’s face … we all have months where our beauty budget is smaller than others.

Did you know you could buy loads of beauty products on ebay?

ebay_anti-aging_skincare_brands.jpg

Seriously, have you noticed how many products are under the eBay beauty category?

A few weeks ago, I was doing a search for an anti-aging product and I noticed that eBay pages kept popping up everywhere. At first, I discounted them because I really couldn’t figure out why eBay was coming up so often, but then I started clicking on the links and noticed that these were actual beauty and anti-aging products.

Do you suffer from severely dry skin in the winter?

Atoplam_cream_dry_skin.jpg

It’s officially winter (and most likely it’s going to be a very long one)!

Alas, we undoubtedly deal with dry and even severely dry skin in the winter. If you’ve not been able to find a cream that helps you through the year’s harshest months, you might want to consider Atopalm. This concentrated formula has been specifically formulated for sensitive and dry skin. A scientific combination of ingredients including pseudo-ceramide, fatty acids and cholesterol relieves the discomfort of dry skin and strengthen the skin’s own barrier function while providing essential moisture.

Since I had never heard of the effectiveness of pseudo-ceramides before, I asked one of the distributors of Atopalm to explain the benefits in further detail.

Beauty and Skincare Stories we’re working on for 2008

*** Embrace the NEW year ***

Christmas came early for me. Since October, I’ve been tracking down some really great beauty and skincare products that I cannot wait to share with you.

I’m not going to reveal it all … but I will give you a quick sneak peak of a few great stories to come:

1. New skincare products are still surfacing every single day and there are many new products to share with you.

2. A lot of acne suffers will be excited to find out that we might have found some really excellent products that can help control acne from the inside. This is the most common question I get. The minute people know that I’m a beauty editor, they immediately ask: What can I do about my blemishes? I’ve found a lot of new and exciting products.

3. We’ll be testing what is called “functional fast food” … this is an easy (if not the easiest) way of including powerful anti-oxidants in your diet.

2008 beauty cosmetic rejuvenation and enhancement trends

beauty_trends.jpg

*** Embrace the NEW year ***

I recently attended a medical spa conference to check out the new and upcoming trends in the cosmetic rejuvenation industry. It turns out that it was not so much new trends that were featured, but rather some of the skin conditions that this industry was focusing on.

It’s obvious the usual suspects were present: injections, light therapy, cellulite treatment, laser-resurfacing treatments and a range of cosmeceutical products (medical graded skincare products). That said, there were a number of things worth sharing.

Here are some of the skin conditions that seemed to be top of mind among skincare experts:

Korres Yogurt Mask keeps your skin hydrated

***Best Beauty Gifts***

If winter is causing your combination or oily skin to be dryer than usual, you might have to switch from a clay mask to a hydrating mask. Along with their famous Korres Natural yogurt cream, Korres Natural Products has also created a soothing Korres Yogurt Mask that uses the power of active yogurt and watercress extract to instantly hydrate and comfort oily skin that feels dehydrated.

You might need to use the Korres Yogurt Mask twice a week to benefit fully from the reviving and hydrating affects.

If you don’t have a chance to visit the Korres store located at 110 Wooster St. in New York City, you can still find many spas across the US and Canada that sell the Korres Natural Products yogurt cream.

You can also buy Korres Yogurt Mask at Sephora stores or on Sephora’s Web site.

The 40ml/1.35 oz jar of Korres Yogurt Mask retails for C$41/US$27.

Korres Natural Products: yogurt for your face?

***Best Beauty Gifts***

Yogurt is one of my all time favourite snacks. One of the major highlights of any European trip for me is to actually eat as many different types of yogurts as I can get my hands on.

I’ve definitely tried the occasional yogurt mask in the past after hearing of the hydrating benefits … but this is the first I hear of a yogurt face cream.

It’s true that most North Americans are unaware that yogurt is an ancient healing remedy that goes back centuries. In Greece, yogurt is known for its ability to instantly soothe the skin by delivering increased moisture to the upper levels of the epidermis.

After opening a homeopathic pharmacy in Athens with smashing success, Greek’s most international cosmetic company, Korres Natural Products, has made its way to North America.

They’ve been selling their revitalizing cream like crazy and they’ve recently opened a store in New York City, located at 110 Wooster St.

Why is Korres so popular?

A Guerlain firming facial for skin aged 35-50

*** Beauty Match in London (U.K.)***

Guerlain, might be a French institution, but British women have adopted the ways of the French with much ease.

Just like the French, British women are taking facials very seriously…and Londoners are flocking to Guerlain’s Beauty Cabin on the fifth floor of Harrods in Knightsbridge store to ensure they maintain their skin in prime condition as they age.

Since 1828, Guerlain has been synonymous with beauty. Guerlain opened its first beauty institute in 1939 on les Champs-Élysées in Paris and has since used a combination of advance high-performance beauty techniques and skin care ingredients to create what is commonly known today as the “art of Guerlain beauty care”.

Luckily for us, Guerlain’s sophisticated know-how can be found right here in North America.

If you are looking to firm up your skin and retain that youthful tightness, Guerlain’s Optimum Firming Treatment might be the perfect Beauty Match for you. The firming facial targets clients aged 35-50, but like every single facial at Guerlain, the treatment will be customized to your particular skin care concern.

Guerlain’s Optimum Firming Treatment is a 90-minute facial during which your beauty expert will use a series of Guerlain Ultra Firming products and will finish the facial with Guerlain’s signature massage: “Les gestes de Guerlain”.

Anna Kalashnikov, skin care therapist at Guerlain Institute in Toronto, explains that many clients immediately see results because they feel the lower face lifted and firmed.

I’ve had the great luxury of experiencing the ultimate pleasures of a Guerlain facial. I treated myself to a few customized ones and I must say, they are some of the best facials I’ve ever received. It makes a serious difference when the facial is customized to your skin problems and you see it in the end results.

Guerlain’s Optimum Firming Treatment retails for $95. You can purchase a package of 6 facials for $475 (that’s $79.17 each facial).

Alas, there are only two Guerlain Institutes in Canada – one in Toronto and Montreal. If you don’t live in these cities, this might be a great treat during a vacation or business trip. Guerlain Toronto (on Bloor Street) 416-929-6114; Guerlain Montreal (on Greene Avenue) 514-933-6114.

In America, you can find Guerlain treatments at Spa Chakra in Indianapolis, Spa at the Breakers in Palm Beach and Spa Chakra inside Avalon Hotel & Spa in Portland.

You can consult Guerlain’s location finder for international locations.

Skincare basics for rosacea sufferers

Treating rosacea consists primarily of treating the symptoms of redness and inflammation. We consulted with Dr. Kevin C. Smith, from Niagara Falls Dermatology and Laser Centre for some detailed skincare treatments to help rosacea sufferers.

The first thing Dr. Smith wanted to highlight was that rosacea suffers should avoid overwashing their face: “excessive washing can irritate the skin and remove the natural oils”. He suggests using plain water with no soap and no wash cloth. If you really feel the need for soap to remove makeup residue, Dr. Smith recommends Dove soap (the colour-free and fragrance-free one). He prescribes a moisturizer by the name of Rosasol because it’s extremely effective at hydrating the skin and it also has a SPF built in the formula. Dr. Smith warned against excessive sun exposure, explaining that too much sun will increase the redness and sensitivity of rosacea-prone skin. He also recommends that his patient not use any toners or astringents, as they will cause more harm than good.

For those patients who are not responding to the other creams that Dr. Smith prescribes, he’ll usually give these types of patients a low-dosage oral prescription of Accutane.
