Keeping and using makeup for too long can cause numerous eye and skin infections. Yuck! My Beauty Match Insider tips for when to discard: Mascara should be thrown out after 3months, eye shadow if powder can last up to 2 years, but cream based about 4 months. Everyone wants to look good. Seems that every time you open a magazine or turn on the TV there are beautiful celebrities everywhere. Their hair is perfect and their skin is flawless. The first and most sensible thing to do is start wearing a strong SPF everyday and a hat. But sometimes I forget or just can’t match a hat to my outfit.  There is no question that many a celebrity has appeared recently with lighter, more even skin tone and less freckles.  Nicole Kidman somehow shed her famous freckles of the 1990’s and Rihanna looks much lighter over all than when she first hit the music scene. How are they doing it? I don’t see them with hats on all the time. Are they taking weekly trips to the Dermatologist’s office? Maybe they’re using amazing skin care products?

After a lot of research about skin lightening products, I’ve narrowed it down to a few.  One option is to see a dermatologist and have a chemical wash that contains glycolic acid.  These washes do work but can cause some irritation and the pigmentation usually returns. Dermatologists also offer in office Microdermabrasion treatments (see at home Microdermabrasion System 6 piece),which can help to remove dead skin cells and hyperpigmentation, but cost a pretty penny. Another option is to use skin care products that contain hydroquinone.

Pro + Therapy Ultra Rich Night Repair (1.7 oz.)

Hydroquinone will lighten skin, but there are many negative side effects and can cause permanent pigmentation elimination i.e. ‘bleached out’ skin, think Michael Jackson. However, Kinerase makes a good product that contains hydroquinone called Kinerase Pro + Therapy Skin Lightner (Kinerase Day Care, 50 ml Pro+ Therapy Ultra Light SPF 30 for Women) if you decide to go this route. Going the natural approach is also an option. Products that contain alpha arbutin can act similarly to hydroquinone except that they aren’t as intense and do not bleach the skin. Alpha arbutin, a natural ingredient derived from berries, acts to inhibit the melanin in the skin as opposed to bleaching the dark areas. Goldfaden Skincare’s Disappear (Goldfaden Disappear for Hyperpigmentation) is a skin lightening product that contains alpha arbutin and works very well when combined with an exfoliation product.

So, what to do? I think I will choose a combination of three.  First, I will go see my dermatologist and see what he has to say. Secondly, I will start wearing my SPF and a hat as much as possible and then I will try Goldfaden’s Disappear serum. The reality is that it’s very hard to look perfect all the time and with Kim Kardashian’s announcement that she has Psoriasis, I don’t feel too insecure about some silly freckles and brown spots.
