I’m a huge fan of hemp seeds and hemp seed oil for my own consumption, but I would have imagined that you could add hemp seed oil to cosmetics.

That’s exactly what Verde Cosmetics is all about. It’s no surprise that as Canadians, we’d produce a line of cosmetics made of hemp since Canada is the top producer of hemp!

I was curious to understand why they used hemp seed oil in their products and the reasoning is quite interesting:

Hemp Seed Oil is perfectly suited for hair and skin care. Its nutritional value, combined with its moisturizing and replenishing EFA’s, make it one of the best vegetable body care foundations. Hemp seed oil’s EFA complement includes polyunsaturated fatty acids, omega-3, omega-6, omega-9, linoleic acid, and gamma linoleic acids (GLA’s). Although they are very effective in skin care maintenance, GLA’s are rarely found in natural oils. Hemp is an excellent source of GLA’s.

A few weeks ago, I was invited to a great afternoon among other beauty editors and beauty bloggers over lunch to talk about Olay’s new product launches!

The afternoon was made ever more enjoyable by the fact that we all met at the Jamie Kennedy restaurant located in the newly renovated Gardiner Museum.

International readers, if you do visit Toronto, you’ll want to make a stop at the Jamie Kennedy restaurant for lunch because the food is super delicious and the setting is so sleek. They have a patio that makes people watching a national sport. Trust me … you won’t be disappointed.

Obviously this afternoon wasn’t all about great food, we also had to talk about anti-aging skincare.

The mood was quite interesting at P & G because after quizzing a number of people working for the cosmetic giant about how the economy had affected their sales, I was told that consumers have flocked to P & G beauty products en masse (in great numbers) because consumers are now looking for anti-aging skincare that is more affordable that the $400 cream they might have been able to justify buying before the October 2008 market crash.

Again this morning, I got an industry report declaring that both Avon and Revlon (two other affordable skincare brands) have seen important decline in sales.

If you are trying to cut back on your beauty budget, then you’ll be excited about this new line of Olay products which are all quite reasonably priced.

Before I give you a list of products I’ve given Eleni and Daphne to review in the coming months, I wanted to point out that the special guest at the Olay lunch was dermatologist and frequent guest on the show Style by Jury Dr. Kucy Pon.

Dr. Pon did a presentation on the important of protecting the neck against sun damage (so many women forget to protect their neck and chest, aka décolleté area).

We’re always on the lookout for new skincare products that claim to restore your skin to its natural and more youthful days.

What we’ve found is that Lancôme has joined forces with L’Oréal Advanced Research, Lancôme Laboratories, the Saint-Louis Teaching Hospital in Paris and the Laval University Teaching Hospital in Quebec City to create Génifique, a youth activating concentrate that aims at revitalizing your inner youth through your skin.

I’m usually a little wary of these products because I usually have very high expectations of this product so it’s a good idea to get a better idea of where the product came from.

So let’s take a look at what Lancôme did:

Having ten years of research (a lot of which are based on women around 35 and 65) in genetics and proteins and previous techniques to draw from, the Lancôme team and their partners have taken what they have learned about skin and its proteins to get a better understanding of how your skin works.

By doing so, they have become more equipped to know how to make your skin appear at its very best which is how they came up with the formula to create the youth activating concentrate. One of the results that they have found valuable is that specific genes activate healthy proteins into your skin that make it appear youthful, like what you had during your younger years.

They have found that as you get older, less of those genes are there which is why your skin doesn’t hold on its youthfulness as it once used to. So the product here aims to do what your body used to do.

How do you use Lancôme’s Genifique?

Like I said the Génifique comes in the form of a concentrate so to apply this product you take the wand out of the bottle to drop little droplets onto your skin. In about seven days you should be able to see the effects. Your skin is supposed to appear much softer and reminiscent of your younger days. It acts as a complement to your daily skin care routine to help maintain a youthful look to your skin. So for the full effects you are supposed to use the Génifique once in the morning and once at night along with moisturizing cream or a serum.

All of this fancy research to create this product doesn’t come cheap. It is available at all Lancôme counters at $78 USD/$92 CAD.

Yogurt is one of my all-time favourite snacks. One of the major highlights of any European trip for me is to actually eat as many different types of yogurts as I can get my hands on.

Europeans are big on yogurt and they’ll eat it either sweet or savoury.  In North America, most people are unaware that yogurt is an ancient healing remedy that goes back centuries.

Yogurt is excellent at helping out digestion and it’s also excellent at hydrating the skin.

NARS Cosmetics is unquestionably my favourite makeup find of 2008! Once I tried their spring 2008 collection … there was no going back!

What I didn’t know was that they also have a full range of skincare products that are equally sensational.

I’ve done research on the Internet to see if others agreed with me in terms of how pleased they were with NARS Skin products and most sites that either feature the products or sell the line have customer testimonials that were quite favourable. Many products received a 3 ½ stars out of 5 and most of the products in the NARS Skin line received a 4/5 stars!

It’s true that NARS Skin is not one of the most inexpensive skin care lines on the market, but at least you know that many other users are happy with the results. If you’re going to buy a product, it’s good to know that it will deliver on its promise!

Dr Marko Lens is a plastic surgeon and skin cancer specialist with a practice on Harley Street in London who has seen his share of sun-damaged skin. It’s little wonder that he decided to create a face cream to protect the skin against the harmful effect of the sun and pollution.

Dr. Lens’ formula, playfully named Zelens, contains one secret ingredient called C60. This is a powerful antioxidant. From what I understand C60 is a molecule that won a Nobel Prize and that is now being used by Dr. Lens in this super-high-tech formulation.

The formula seems to be so powerful that Zelens Skin Science claims that their face creams can neutralize free radicals 100 times more effectively than vitamin E and that their night cream stimulates the cells that produce collagen.

Dr. Marko Lens’ Zelens face cream is not yet available in Canada or in the U.S., but you will find it online at Zelens.co.uk or at Spacenk.co.uk. Since the cream is already quite pricey at £95 or $263 (night cream costs $292 and the under eye cream costs $185) and adding shipping on top of that would bring the price to well over $300 … it might be best to grab your jar of Zelens during your next trip to London.

To be perfectly honest, I’ve not yet tried it, but the name is so irresistible, how can I pass up the opportunity to feature an anti-aging product that’s called “Good in Bed Restoring Night Moisturizer”?

Obviously, the idea is that our cells rejuvenate during our sleep and most of us sleep in a bed … hence … “Good in Bed Skin Restoring Night Moisturizer”. The double entendre is simply delicious.

Since I’ve not yet had the opportunity to try out the product, I thought I’d highlight some features from the Prescriptives site:

Canadians will have to head to Holt Renfrew for this Prescriptives night cream! You can also purchase the cream on Prescriptives’ Web site.

Kiehl’s anti-aging Abyssine Cream is getting a lot of high marks from many satisfied users and the beauty press. The key ingredient that seems that be delivering great benefits is called ‘corallina extract’ which is a mineral-rich red alga derived from hydrothermal ocean vents that seems to be quite effective at protecting the skin against environmental damage and free radicals.

Kiehl’s anti-aging Abyssine Cream also contains ginkgo, vitamin C and E. When these antioxidants are combined to the corallina extract, you get a cream that thickens your skin and help reinforce the moisture barrier function of the skin.

As I’ve said, it’s getting a lot of high marks and this might be an ideal product to heal your skin after a particularly brutal winter before you skin gets exposed to long hours of summer sunshine!

This anti-redness line from La Prairie is also excellent at hiding the tell tale signs of a recent dermatological or clinical treatment.

The Cellular Nurturing Cream Anti-Redness is designed to heal and desensitize your skin, while the Cellular Nurturing Complex serum helps speed the recovery of severely distressed skin.

This La Prairie line will be a salvation and will feel like a soothing remedy that relieves tightness, reduces flaking, peeling and redness.

Most plastic surgeons and cosmetic dermatologist will prescribe some post-treatment products, so if you do decide to use La Prairie’s Cellular Nurturing Cream Anti-Redness, you’ll want to let you doctor know.

As with any La Prairie products, the Cellular Nurturing Cream Anti-Redness cream and serum are fairly expensive (in the $200 price range), but La Prairie is one of those lines that has a legion of devotees. You might want to pop by a La Prairie counter to try out the product or ask for a sample.

I did notice that they have a new Prevage Anti-Aging Night Cream and since I cannot test it to see how effective, I wanted to see if any of my readers had bought it and tried it and how happy they were with the product.

If you’ve not heard about Elizabeth Arden’s Prevage Anti-Aging Night Cream is formulated with Elizabeth Arden’s super-antioxidant idebenone.

Their new anti-aging night cream contains Mega Complex-A, an age-fighting blend of vitamins A and E, along with lemon peel extract and carotenoids to address discolouration and promote firmer skin. Prevage Anti-Aging Night Cream also contains shea butter and cocoa butter to help your skin seal the moisture in.

Estee Lauder has a new anti-aging skincare on the market. Although not one of the most expensive products on wrinkle-fighting the market, it still comes in at the hefty price tag of $250 US/$325 CDN (you’ll find it in Canada at The Bay stores and Holt Renfrew Stores).

Now, I won’t lie, I’ve not tried this product, but I did find it important to highlight because a lot of women are quite devoted to Estee Lauder products, but also because one of the ingredients in the product was actually discovered by David Sinclair, PhD of Harvard Medical School and Leonar Guarante PhD of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Another reason that prompted me to highlight Estee Lauder Re-Nutriv Ultimate Youth Crème is the fact that some beauty editors who have tried it, rave about it and state this is the BEST product they’ve ever tried while other beauty editors are questioning the effectiveness of product, some the ingredients in the formulation and the price tag. I’ve also seen some beauty editors give the product a fairly low grade.

When there is controversy around a product, it’s always best to proceed with caution and you might want to test the product by asking for a sample if $250 US/$325 is more than you’d normally invest in a skincare product.

Estée Lauder’s patent pending Youth Molecule

Estée Lauder’s new ReNutriv Ultimate Youth Creme contains Resveratrate^TM and according to the cosmetic company behind this product, Resveratrate^TM is considered to be one of the most potent, stable and time-released form of Resveratrol (an antioxidant derived from red wine, red wine, grapes, plums, peanuts, and other plant products). During testing, Resveratrate^TM has been shown to provide six times more protection from environmental damage.

A few other antioxidants used in the formulation of Estée Lauder’s ReNutriv Ultimate Youth Creme include South Sea Pearls, calming red and brown algae, grape seed extract and tocopheryl linoleate (advanced form of vitamin E that promotes soft, supple skin).
