Fearless Women: Midlife Portraits – Celebrating women in their 40s, 50s and 60’s!

fearless_women_midle_age_portraits.jpg
I have recently found a really great book that celebrates women as they age. I was running through my local bookstore when I was stopped in my tracks by the black and white image of a sexy woman branding a sword over her head.

I immediately picked up the book and started flipping through the pages. I knew I would not have time to read the book before actually featuring it, but it seemed to be such an inspirational book that I thought I MUST highlighted.

Turning 40, 50 or 60: Is it okay to admit that aging might not always be a joyride?

This is exactly what Nora Ephron exposes in her new book “I Feel Bad About My Neck: And Other Thoughts on Being a Woman”. This is definitely a book that you have to read with a touch of humour, but you’ll quickly realize there is also a lot of sadness in Nora’s accounts of the many changes that come with age.

It’s become very trendy to focus on the positive aspects of aging and since we are living in a new millennium and the Baby Boomers who precede my generation have opened the floodgates to cosmetic rejuvenation (no one needs to know your real age, after all) …

Whole foods will help you age better

Super Natural Cooking
In February 2007, the government updated the Canadian Food Guide after 40 years. It’s no secret that whole foods, slow foods (as opposed to fast foods) and natural foods are much better options if you want to maintain optimal health. But if you are still uncertain how to integrate better quality foods in your diet in a way that’s easy and convenient, you may want to take a cue from cookbook author Heidi Swanson. In her new book, Super Natural Cooking: Five Delicious Ways to Incorporate Whole & Natural Ingredients Into Your Cooking, Swanson shows us how to use a palette of natural ingredients (now widely available in most Canadian supermarkets)

Stop yo-yo dieting to age well

You_on_a_diet_2.jpg
You: On A Diet : The Owner’s Manual for Waist Management is the new anti-diet book by Dr. Michael F. Roizen and Dr. Mehmet C. Oz (Dr. Oz is on Oprah’s health advisory team). There is surely no lack of new diet fads out there, but you won’t find any of them in this new book. Dr. Roizen and Dr. Oz state upfront that “diets simply don’t work”. If you are a serial-dieter, than you know that diets may work for a short period of time, but that dieting will most likely add pounds to your frame as opposed to shedding them over the long run.

Your anti-aging regime should include more “good” fats than “bad” fats

fat%20that%20heals.jpg

As you know, I’m not a naturopathic doctor or a doctor for that matter; I’m just a GenXer on a journey to aging well. If you want to know more about how Omegas and other “good” fats can contribute to the youthfulness of your skin, the longevity of your life and help you fight the signs of aging, you may want to pick-up a copy of Udo Erasmus’ best-selling book:

Fats that Heal Fats that Kill

I’ve had the pleasure of working with Udo and he is by far the most reputable North American expert on oils. He first published this book in 1986, but it is still considered a “Bible of good fats”. You can buy his book or you can borrow a copy at the library. This is not an easy read because some parts can be fairly scientific with a lot of reference to biology, but it’s an important read.
