I’d like to think that I know my info commercials and this is one that I’ve just started seeing these last couple of months: the EZ Combs.

I wasn’t impressed or that inclined to buy the thing because I have a lot of thick hair and I go through hairbands left and right.

I’ve tried all those combs and weird hair clips that are supposed to give you those fancy hairdos like the twist and let me tell you, all of the styles do not work on my hair.

I am usually left very unsatisfied. Sometimes a chopstick is more effective to twist my hair up, but that doesn’t last very long either.

That’s why I am very skeptical about the EZ Combs. I find that these sorts of hair accessories often work better for people with finer and less hair.

While this product is selling at 4 for $10 (plus those shipping fees make it closer to $20), I’m not sure I would need four, unless they break easily. Maybe you’d want four if you really do like those assortments of colours (black, caramel and silver).

I don’t find the EZ Combs to be very stylish or even widely used. I have yet to meet someone who has even seen the commercials besides me (and maybe Krizia)!

I will say that I did think it looks better than the chunky butterfly combs but oddly enough I still see people using those as opposed to these EZ Combs. I would be suspicious if it would hurt your head after longer periods of usage. The butterfly comb seems to have a similar mechanism for holding your hair up. Something that holds your hair up by clinging tightly to your head doesn’t sound relaxing or comfortable.

Our Editorial Assistant Colleen takes a look at the In Styler!

I’ve always been more on the lookout for the newest and latest straightening irons because I have a lot of thick hair but my editor came across this product: In Styler Hair Rotating Hot Iron.

From looking at various demonstrations of it, I find that it looks quite easy to use.

It has a dual system: a set of brushes then a polishing cylinder to give your hair that shiny look that everyone loves.

The winning aspect of this product is that is it quite versatile because it’s pretty much like a straightener and curler built in one.  And I would get it if it really does make my hair all shiny in the end!

The only problem that I find with these products, for myself in particular, is that it takes a lot more time when you have thick hair like mine. Your hand also gets incredibly tired of squeezing down your hair while you slowly bring the tool down to the full length of your hair.

Here are the styles you can achieve with the In Styler:

The Flip: One of the girls featured in their commercial is a girl with thin and body-less hair. Using the iron, they transformed her limp hair to a more volumized set of locks. The girl was given a flip hairdo. The flip had a fluid flow to it than what you would normally get with a standard curling iron because of the built-in (they also move automatically) that the hair is fed into. They say that you can’t give yourself this style unless you use a brush and a blow dryer. I agree. I think that this is a nice look if you like this style and it does look like it can be done within minutes. Again, people with longer and thicker hair like mine may not have the patience for a tool like the In Styler.

Spiral Curls: This one’s pretty simple. You pretty much use the In Styler like a curling iron. Taking a piece of your hair that you want curled you wrap it around the cylinder portion of the device and hold it for awhile depending on how curly you want it to be. Then you let it go and do the rest of your hair. Tousle and loosen the curls when you’re done. Like I said, this style is obtained in pretty much the same as your average curling iron. Nothing special here.

Volumizing your hair: I think the In Styler is quite efficient at getting you this look. It’s rather simple to do. You just insert your chunk of hair into the In Styler and simple raise your hand upwards away from where your hair normally falls, and wait until all of your hair has gone through. This style is something that I think is unique to this product that can’t really be achieved well with your curling iron or straightener. The next best thing might be a skilled hairdresser with a round brush and a good blow dryer!

Straightening your hair: So this product also straightens your hair. You can fancy up the regular straightened hair with a small curl inwards or outwards if you so wish. Like I said before, this is a lot easier for people with less hair. The more hair you have, the longer it’ll take. If you have frizzy or curly hair, this product works to smooth it out to give you soft locks. Here’s a great example. The In Styler reps showcases American Idol’s finalist contestant Kimberly Locke’s hair as going from “unruly” to a straight, sleek style in a matter of minutes.

Bangs: This product doesn’t forget about those of you with bangs. You can curl your bangs towards you or away from you using this In Styler. I think this is a particularly useful because it’s quite annoying when you can’t get your bangs looking the way you want it to look. My only problem with this is, how is this method any different from using your curling iron? Unfortunately, not much. I used to watch my cousin do this with her bangs for years with her beloved curling iron.

I would caution that although the product does say that the result will be shiny hair and that your hair won’t get damaged or burned, I would still use some sort of leave-in conditioner to keep your hair healthy. Long term usage of any product that uses heat on your hair could result in damage if your hair isn’t properly maintained.

If you exercise a lot or if you tend to have oily hair, you might have been washing your hair on a daily basis to keep it clean. Washing, blow drying and styling your hair on a daily base will cause a lot stress and will end up damaging it in the long run.

Now that summer is finally here and a lot of us will have many more social events than at any time of the year, it might mean that we’ll have weeks where we are party hopping and washing our hair before every event might not be a possibility.

You already know the scene: you’re late for work, the phone is ringing, your kids are not co-operating, you realize that your blouse needs ironing and you still have not done your hair. It’s true that Michelle Obama is black, but since her hair is blow dried and flat ironed, women of any ethnicity can take a few notes from Michelle Obama hairstyle of choice.

How does she maintain her sleek and stylish bob haircut?

Michelle’s short bob is a great cut that can be worn so many different ways and it fits the lifestyle of the busy woman so well.

Can women with curly hair still adopt the Michelle Obama hairstyle?

Mixed raced beauties, women with naturally curly or black women who wear their hair natural can easily wear the Michelle Obama bob (of course black women with chemical relaxers can also achieve this look, although Michelle Obama doesn’t have a chemical relaxer in her hair … just like Queen Oprah who also sports natural hair).

Since we ALL have bad hair days or days where we are simply way too busy to think about having perfect hair, a bob can still be a very versatile look for any type of day that you’re having.

* You can easily pull your hair back and wear it in a low chignon (bun).

* Michelle can also choose to put a few crystal studded pins on each side of her hair.

* Michelle can certainly go retro and add a headband for days where her hair is not co-operating.

* I love the vintage flip on a bob and Michelle Obama has done it so well during the campaign trail.

* Doing the reverse to a flip is also a great alternative. Michelle has been seen wearing her ends curled inside.

* Of course Michelle could go British and use a stylish hat as an alternative to those days when she doesn’t want to fuss with her hair.

Do you remember one of the two winners of our 2008 Karmin Titanium Hair Straightening Iron contest we ran in November?

If you remember, when it was time for me to choose one winner, I simply could not make up my mind because I felt that both Robin and Toye had done such a great job at explaining why they should win a free flat iron … so I had to beg for a second flat iron!

A few weeks ago, Robin posted a comment on one of the posts regarding the contest where she explained that she LOVED her new Karmin flat iron because she was now finally able to say bye-bye to frizziness. She also expressed her desire to show off her perfectly coiffed hair to Beauty Match readers and to the world, so I took her up on her offer and asked her to email me a photo and I told her that I’d write a dedicated post about her experience and I’d put up her photo!

I’ll be honest, the most interesting part of running any type of contest is really the reaction you get from people when they receive their prize because it’s a great surprise – what can I say … I’m a giver!

I’m quite happy that Robin was willing to take the time to write in and send her photo.

Just one last quick note about Robin’s photo, other than the fact that she’s totally gorgeous (am I the only one envying her perfect skin?), you can see how different each side is. It’s obvious that the left side of her face is the after shot. I love the fact that she took a photo of herself after having sleeked out only one side of her head … that’s so Hollywood!

A few weeks ago, P & G hosted an event at a swanky restaurant in the west-end of the city to introduce a few products. I got Eleni and Daphne to review the products, but I thought it might be fun to highlight some of the photos from ‘P & G’s champagne event’.

The evening of course included one of my favourite beverages – champagne! They were serving Veuve Clicquot and I much (MUCH) prefer Moet & Chandon, but I’m not one to turn my nose up at champagne.

I think the most important photos are the models’ hair. All of these models were prepped with Nice’n Easy Perfect 10 colour (and it was the first time they coloured their hair) and the stylists used the appropriate Pantene Expressions shampoo and conditioner. The requirements for the contest were very simple: post your worst “BAD hair day story”.

I have to say that the 16 ladies who dared to air their bad hair day stories for the rest of the world to read were brave and I salute them.

A lot of the posts made me laugh and some I read in horror because I was able to place myself in your shoes and relive your bad-hair-day stories.

I selected those two winners because I could feel the pain of my biracial sister Robin in her story about having hair that is a bit too frizzy to tame and I will tell you that my sister Toye made me almost cry with laughter when I realized what that little baby did to expose her in front of her boyfriend.

“Where do I begin! First of all I have biracial hair so everytime I go to the hairdresser I get the lecture of how I should always use a good conditioner and not flatiron my hair all the time to prevent my hair from being damaged. I then inform them that I have biracial hair, that I use conditioner whenever I wash my hair, I use a hair mask weekly and that I use a flatiron carefully!

Anyway, i have hair that is not straight nor is it curl…I guess the right word for it would be frizzy. One day I popped in on my friend’s halloween party to pick up another friend who needed a ride home because she was drunk and I was told by a guest at the party that I made a great medusa! The thing is, I had not teased out my hair and just because I was wearing black and my hair was big and black and somewhat frizzy, someone thought that it was my bloody costume! BRUTAL! Anyway, help! I need a hair straightener that is durable and that works so my hair can look sleek and people no longer think I am in costume when I am just out and about!” – Robin

“My BAD hair story happened ten years ago when I was a mousy brunette wanting blond locks but too scared to take the plunge. I had been longing for an expensive long blond wig at the shop where my friend worked. She got a discount and I was reluctantly talked into buying the wig. The wig looked great on me and gave me a new found confidence! I met a man at a local pub while wearing it and he complimented me on my long, flowing locks. Well, we started dating and I still couldn’t bring myself to tell him my hair was fake! He took me to meet his family and I made the mistake of holding his baby brother. The baby reached up in one quick, powerful swoop and jerked the wig off! I stood in shock as his father started to laugh and his mother quickly apologized. My boyfriend stood there with his mouth agape and I ran from the room! To make a long story short we all had a good laugh after I calmed down and my bf told me he actually liked my brown hair much better!
