Fall 2009 Fashion Trends

September 22, 2009 - Follow me on Twitter

Jimmy Choo will be designing an entire collection for H&M! This collection is set to hit stores on November 14 and it will be a mad zoo. Jimmy Choo shoes are even quite pricey on sale, so you know this (affordable) partnership with H&M will make a lot of women lose it completely. I can already see the headlines and the line-up of women who will be camping in front of H&M stores for days in order to get their hands on at least of pair of affordable Jimmy Choo shoes! I saw a few of the styles that Jimmy Choo designers have created for H&M and it will be madness on November 14 around the world with women fighting to get their hands on sexy-stilettos.

Since the Fall 2009 Fashions shows took place earlier this year as most of us watched out retirement savings and other investment dwindle to dismal numbers, I decided not to go to any of the international fashion shows because I just really could see myself forking that kind of money without any assurance of what the future would bring.

The recent financial crisis has had a huge impact on the fashion industry. For the past two collections (fall 2009 and spring/summer 2010, many designers have trimmed down their shows to cut costs as much as possible. Many fashion houses find themselves in limbo and a lot of them have already declared bankruptcy.

The fashion magazine world has also been dramatically affected because they now have less ad money and as a result many of my 2009 fashion magazines have been slimmer than ever. Even the colossal September issues which are usually as thick as a phone book have trimmed down substantially. Another sign of the times is the fact that most fashion magazine have been featuring “budget buys”. By that I mean that magazines like Bazaar have been dressing their super-skinny models with fashion pieces that are actually affordable. I’ve been seeing clothing priced in the $200-$600 price range in Bazaar. Yes, I do recognize that for many that’s still high, but the reality is that until the financial crisis the only thing you could find in Bazaar that cost $200-$600  were sun glasses, scarves and skincare.

That said, I’ve been following throughout the year a lot of the best moments of Fall 2009 Fashion Trends and I’ve collecting loads of amazing links that show some of the best fashion has to offer.

Since I was not there in person at any of the international fashion shows to track the newest trends in fashion, I’m hoping this collection of links will give you some great inspirations for the new season.

I know a lot people will forfeit any new purchases for the new fashion season, but I still think these links are important because you can get great ideas from the runways of Milan, Paris, New York, London and L.A. and you can simply shop your own closet to get the look without spending a dime.

Before I jump into my collection of links, I thought I’d give you a quick rundown of some of the strongest trends of fall 2009:

* Bright colours are back! Black will always dominate fashion, but you can integrate a lot of bright colours this season with your basic black.

* Pull out your prints because they are in fashion again.

* Shoulder pads continue to dominate fashion in a big way (and I mean that literally)

* The 80s are back – the fashion from the “happy era” keeps coming back. I know that I did the 80s fashion during the 80s and I’m not going back because the memories of bright fashion and loads of hair spray in my hair and crazy make-up are way too vivid.

*Though times call for though fashion and menswear influences for women’s wear are back!

* You’ll also see fashion that’s edgier and bolder (very in your face).

* Evening wear will be very girly

If you have feminine wear hidden in your wardrobe, it’s time to pull them out. If you’re into shopping in consignment stores or thrift shops, you’ll surely want to keep an eye out for this fashion trend because you could score some great fashion at really great prices.

* Grey is the new black (again)! Grey is fashionable again (not sure it was ever out of fashion, but designers are pushing grey this season).

* In these uncertain times, basic classic well cut suits are back in fashion! I’m sure most women have a lot of suits hidden in their wardrobes, it might be time to find them, try them on and get them to your seamstress for alterations! I always spend more on suits because I know the investment will pay off in the long run. I detest cheap looking suits … it’s just not very flattering … regardless of your dress size.

* The white blouses will become the “must-have” item this fall. Don’t limit yourself to basic white blouses, you’ll notice that many designers really glammed up the white blouse. If you’ve a white blouse for a while and it’s looking faded or yellowed … it’s high time to buy a new one! If money is tight … head to H & M because you will be able to get a great blouse for a good price. You might only able to wear if until the end of the season, but wearing a shabby looking white blouse is out of the question.

* Trousers come in all shapes this season. Once again, this is very budget-friendly because chances are you already have loads of different trouser/pant styles in your wardrobe.

* If all fails get decked out with accessories!

You should know that if you don’t want to spend any money whatsoever on clothing, you can always get some great bold accessories to really update any clothing you already have in your wardrobe. Accessories are must cheaper than clothing so this might be a great way to refresh a wardrobe without putting any strain on your budget.

* Affordable high end (couture) fashion
