Have you noticed how you can now buy strawberries year round? Strawberries are in season at the end of the summer and that’s when they are red, juicy and they smell so fruity … they are irresistible!

Eating strawberries in December with whipped cream might seem natural to many, but it actually isn’t. Most people who eat off season fruits and vegetables end up eating fruits or vegetables that are tasteless and odorless or they eat fruits and vegetables from foreign countries.

Now, don’t get me wrong, since avocadoes will never grow in my area, I will gladly buy avocados from Mexico … that said, when you buy fruits and vegetables that have travelled long distances, you usually eat them when they are not in their optimum state. They often lack the flavour that locally grown foods have.

When it comes to eating for the season, you can always rely on your local farmer’s market because if farmers cannot grow it locally for the season in question … they won’t be selling it at a farmer’s market.

Another way of eating for the season is to find out what you should eat when.

The following should help guide you during your next trip to the grocery store. The list below is a basic list that applies to most readers living in North America. If you live in South America, Australia or Europe, you’ll find other local fruits and vegetables that are ripe for each season.

Here are a few seasonal vegetables I’ve been enjoying and will continue to enjoy!!
