Did you watch Dr. Phil and Robin McGraw’s guide to beauty in your 40s and 50s?

As I was having a late lunch on Thursday (and channel surfing), I noticed that Dr. Phil and his wife Robin McGraw were featuring makeovers of women in their 40s and 50s. The theme of the show was showing women that your 40s and 50s could be as sexy as your 20s and 30s.

The show featured pretty much what you would expect from these types of shows that Oprah also loves to do: a group of five women who have let themselves go and who were putting everyone first and themselves second (Lisa, Sally, Joanne, Evelyn and Karlyne are moms in their 40s and 50s). On the other side, you had a professional team of Beverly Hills glam-experts who were commissioned by Robin McGraw to give some hotness to these women.
You can also imagine that these women where treated to loads of giveaways of Robin McGraw’s favourite skin care products, spa treatments, designers, sunglasses, robes, fitness wear … and the list goes on. Of course, oil was added to the fire when the audience realized that they were also going to be able to go home with Robin McGraw’s favourite beauty secrets (I’d be jumping up and down as well … those were some serious goody bags).

The theme and advice were quite predictable. The team of professional glam-experts treated these women to intensive workouts, expert eye brown shaping, skin care treatments, expert makeup application, a professional colourist, cosmetic dentistry, a hairdresser to the stars and the Rich and Famous; and Canadian-born stylist Cojo.

I agreed with the idea that skin care, weight loss, a hair style, makeup and teeth whitening can go a long way in terms of making any woman look 10 or even 20 years younger than the age that appears in her passport.

Where Robin McGraw and I parted ways was when the concept of women over 40 should cut their hair to the jaw area or shorter. It seemed that Cojo, Robin and Dr. Phil all agreed that a shorter hair cut makes you look younger.

It’s obvious that Cojo, Robin and Dr. Phil are NOT reading my beauty posts and it’s obvious they’ve not noticed how Italian women (those living in Italy) of any age were sporting long hair.

My personal opinion on hair length has been clear from the beginning, I will not cut my hair over 40 because I’ll be adopting Italian women’s approach. I don’t think that turning 40 should be a finish line when it comes to having long hair.

I intend on crossing that (cut your hair pass 40) line and keep going with my long hair.

If you missed Dr. Phil and his wife Robin McGraw’s “What’s Age Got to Do with It?” show, you can still catch the highlights on their web site. You just need to click on the story link: “What’s Age Got to Do with It?”

If you’ve missed my views on hair length and hair colour, you can still read them … I’d love to know if you agree:

Are European women cutting their hair as they age?

When you turn grey, will you colour your hair?
