Celebrating Black History Month is very much linked to President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama!
I could get all philosophical on you and start writing lines and lines about what Black History Month means this February 2009.
I could take the sexy angle and show the most gorgeous blacks in Hollywood. I could highlight the face of the many black beauties that grace the international catwalks. I could take the mega-powerful angle and list the most financially successful blacks I can think of. I could take the entertainment angle and feature the actors and actresses who given stellar performances on the big and small screen.
But that would be too long and too complicated because Black History Month can be summed up in one word in 2009: Obama!
I don’t know of any person with even one drop of black blood in their bodies who has not been moved to tears by Obama’s recent historical nomination to the highest position in America.
For me, the Obama win is far more than him being half-black, it’s about an education, brilliant and eloquent individual (who happens to be half-black) who inspires people in his own country and people around the world to dare to dream bigger them themselves.
I was watching CNN a few days ago and they reported on how Obama’s speeches where the biggest selling items in Japan! A new generation of Japanese students is learning English thanks to the words of Obama’s November 4th, 2008 and his Inauguration January 20th, 2009 speeches. In fact, they are number one and number two on the Japanese Amazon site! It’s not only students who are saying “Yes we can!”, Japanese businessmen are also snatching these audio recordings of Obama’s speeches because they represent a different kind of English – one that teaches while inspiring.
Black History Month is about NOT forgetting the past. Just like the Jews have done a exceptional job at documenting the horrors of the Holocaust so future generations could learn and not repeat those atrocious crimes, Black History Month serves as a reminder to younger generations of the sacrifices so many men and women were willing to make in order to be respect and recognized as human beings with equal rights.
President Barack Obama is the best representation of the protest and marches of the past and he’s the image and face of today’s America. Obama is also the face of the future because he’s inspired so many younger black Americans that nothing is out of reach when you have clarity in your vision, commitment in your actions and confidence that you CAN overcome any obstacle life throws your way.
I’ve created this collage of magazine covers featuring President Obama or Mr. and Mrs. Obama!
