Carla Bruni: Former model, singer, first lady of France and she’s catching everyone’s attention

I’ve known of Carla Bruni for a few decades now. She started her modelling career around the same time as Christy Turlington, Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Elle Macpherson, Linda Evangelista and Claudia Schiffer. Carla Bruni never ended being as big of a model as the others, but she was well known internationally and she was well known in her adopted city of Paris (she’s born in, Turin Italy, but is naturalized French).

Although she never became a “supermodel”, Carla Bruni still managed to have an illustrious modelling career and was among the highest paid models in the industry. That said, Carla might be better known for her string of lovers than for her modelling career. It’s been reported that she’s dated men like Mick Jagger, Donald Trump and Eric Clapton.

Her reputation in France for her ability to seduce any men she wants (and sometimes destroy existing relationships) has not been very flattering … but that has never seemed to bother her. Her views about love, her refusal to ever marry, her preference for polygamy and the joys of singlehood are legendary in French. She’s been quoted to say: “love lasts a long time, but burning desire, two or three weeks … at the most”.

I became aware of Carla Bruni again in 2004, one year after the release of her French album “Quelqu’un qui m’a dit” (Someone Told Me). A contact of mine who had just came back from Paris told me of the CD and let me listen to one of her songs on her MP3 player and I immediately made my way to the record store to buy it. I could not believe how beautiful Carla’s voice was. It’s so soothing and fragile. To this day, four years after buying that CD, “Quelqu’un qui m’a dit” remains one of my favourites and I never hesitate to put in on when I feel the need for some comforting. I also bought her first English CD, but I’ll admit to liking her singing in French much more than her singing in English.

France is no stranger to men (and women) having long term affairs. Ex-presidents have been known to have lovers and children on the side, but Nicolas Sarkozy might be the first French president to actually divorce his wife of many years while in office and later marry his love interest.

In a recent interview with Barbara Walters who went to Paris to meet the new First Lady of France to talk about her new political role, finding true love in your 40s, her sense of style (she’s been topping the list of best dressed women in Europe) and her upcoming new album, she revealed that she never imagined that she would fall in love and actually want to marry at 40! Meeting and falling madly in love with the president of France was a complete surprise to Carla, but she likes being monogamous for once in her life.

She might be the heiress to an important Italian family, a former model, a singer, a multi-millionaire, a beautiful woman and the wife of the French president, but I chose Carla Bruni as my Beauty Match Celebrity Pick because she’s really lived the life she wanted to live without worrying about what others would say or what others might think. I chose her as well because when her album “Quelqu’un qui m’a dit” came out in France, the critics almost crucified her because she was now a model-turned-singer and most of them where wondering what kind of talent she might have (she sold over 300,000 copies OUTSIDE of France with little publicity … only word of mouth). She didn’t let any of that deter her from pursuing her passion and true calling in life.

I might not agree with some of the decisions Carla Bruni-Sarkozy made in her life, but I think if you peel off the layers a bit, you’ll see a role model for women who might hesitate in taking their dreams and running wild with them.
