Black Beauty has never looked better than Iman (aka: Mrs. David Bowie)

I first saw Iman on the cover of Yves Saint Laurent brochures. Back in the mid-80s Yves Saint Laurent presented each new make-up collection via a high gloss/high quality brochure with the picture of one of his most beautiful models (YSL’s make-up line is the first line I ever bought with my allowance money…that’s growing up in Montreal for you). Mr. Saint Laurent was renowned in the fashion world during the eighties for having the largest number of ethnic beauties on his runways. He also used quite a number of them as spokesmodels for his make-up line. I still remember Iman’s Queen-like picture.
Today Iman is in her early 50s and she’s simply radiant. You might say that being at the head of your own cosmetic company might be great motivation to take care of your skin as you age and present an image to women around the world that being gorgeous doesn’t end at 27. I’d say that Iman’s cosmetic company must be motivation enough, but she’s also mentioned in numerous interviews that she moisturizes religiously, uses bronzer year-round and she’s taken up studio boxing via a personal trainer after the birth of her second child (which she had in her mid-40s).
When it comes to black beauties who are aging oh-so-well, Iman is in elite company with foxy beauties like Halle Berry, Vanessa Williams (co-star of the hit series Ugly Betty), Beverly Johnson (70s supermodel), bad-girl Naomi Campbell, British beauty Thandie Newton, Pam Grier (one of the hottest female black stars of the 70s who is currently starring in the hit series “The L Word”), Diahann Carroll (former Dynasty star who recently played Dr. Burke’s mother on an episode of “Grey’s Anatomy”), Michael Michele (former “ER” cast) and the super-resilient Tina Turner.
To Iman and all these beauties, I say: Thank you for showing us glorious black beauty after the age of 35!
