Beverly Johnson is sensational in her fifties!

If you're new to Beauty Match, you may want to subscribe to our RSS feed. Don't miss a beauty beat by joining Beauty Match Insider. Thanks for visiting!

Beverly Johnson broke several stereotypes by becoming the second black woman to grace the cover of Vogue magazine in August 1974. She’s considered to be one of the first supermodels and one of the first commercially accepted black models.

Beverly’s beauty seems to have remained untouched. Today, she may no longer be breaking stereotypes or showcasing the latest fashions on a catwalk but she’s still very active in the beauty industry. Beverly runs her own wig and hair extension company.

At 55 (born in 1952), Beverly could easily pass as a woman 20 years her junior. She’s still as ravishingly beautiful today as she was in her model days. Most recently, she was honoured by Oprah Winfrey at her “Legends Ball”.

Beverly Johnson is my Celebrity Beauty Match Pick because she was one of the most important figures that broke the mould and sent a clear message to the world: Black is beautiful…and she’s still proof of that statement today!

How do Americans eat?

If you were enjoying the late summer weather over the weekend, chances are you missed a pretty informative special investigation report on CNN. Dr. Sanjay Gupta, who is CNN’s health expert, exposed: ‘America’s Killer Diet’ in order to explain how Americans really eat and over eat.

Some of the facts are what you’d expect from this type of investigation on Americans’ diet and their eating habits, but many other facts are quite shocking. For instance, Dr. Sanjay Gupta reveals that the average American kid consumes about 3 lbs (1.36 KG) of sugar per week …most of it hidden inside foods and drinks!

Risks associated with injectable fat fillers

This type of injectable filler has a very low propensity to cause an allergic reaction, because the fat is harvested from your own body. Still, there remains a slight risk of infection and other infrequent complications.

You should keep in mind that injectable fat fillers will require anesthesia (this is a cosmetic surgery and not a non-invasive anti-aging treatment). In fact, both the donor and recipient sites (where the fat is extracted from your body and the location where it will be injected) are numbed with local anesthesia. Your plastic surgeon might even opt to give you additional sedation to reduce the pain and discomfort factors.

Risks associated with injectable collagen fillers

Allergic reactions are the most common risks associated with injectable collagen fillers. To help determine if you are allergic to collagen, your doctor would perform an allergy skin test about 30 days prior to the date of your procedure. After the test is performed, you should carefully watch the area tested for three or four weeks (or as long as your doctor advises) to ensure that you don’t have any negative reactions to the collagen. You should immediately report any sign of redness, itching or swelling. Other risks associated with an allergic reaction to injectable collagen fillers include infections, abscesses, open sores, skin peeling, scarring and lumpiness.

Men are also getting injectable collagen

Injectable collagen is also quite popular for those looking to add a fuller, more sensuous look to their lips and many Canadians are getting some pretty favourable results from these types of fillers. While the “Angelina Jolie pout” is one of the most requested shapes among women looking for fuller lips, many men who had very fine lips are using injectable collagen to even out their features.

Cosmeceuticals are quite a different grade from retail sold skincare products.

In this segment, we’ll understand what that difference is and what difference it can make on the overall health of your skin.

We’ll also take a fascinating look at how certain enzymes are highly responsible for skin sagging, wrinkles and fine lines and what you can do about it.

Our guest on the show is Stéphane Gagné, founder and president of Partenaris Inc. which formulates and distributes Lorivia Integral Renewal Serum internationally.

Darker skin beauties are also sensitive to free radicals

blackbeauty_cropped2.jpg
On the down side, darker skins are very susceptible to dark spots, unevenness, ashiness and hyperpigmentation. On the up side, darker skins contain more melanin and are thicker than fairer complexions. This difference in melanin prevents premature aging in most darker skin complexions. That said, free radicals are oblivious to colour and they surely don’t care about levels of melanin. Free radicals will cause wrinkles in lighter complexions while plaguing darker complexions with uneven pigmentations and loss of youthfulness.

Injectable fillers can give you a more youthful look

Sometimes, skin resurfacing treatments alone may not offer the youthful appearance you desire. Depending on your lifestyle and your genetics, you may lose collagen mass in your face as early as your early thirties. For some, it may be a sign of maturity and wisdom, while others want to take a more assertive approach to restoring a more youthful look.

Injectable fillers — like Restylane® injections — are an effective anti-aging treatment for those who are looking to regain lost collagen mass in their face and neck. Injected collagen and fat are primarily used to improve the appearance of the skin’s texture, but they will also help fill out deep facial wrinkles, creases and furrows, “sunken” cheeks, skin depressions and certain types of scars.
