Terrence Howard’s skincare and anti-aging secrets

If you're new to Beauty Match, you may want to subscribe to our RSS feed. Don't miss a beauty beat by joining Beauty Match Insider. Thanks for visiting!

He might just be one of Hollywood’s sexiest newcomers. Even though, Terrence Howard has been acting for years now (since the late 1980s to be exact), it took until 2004 for him to catch everyone’s attention for being part of the cast of 2005’s Best Picture of the year — “Crash” and later on in 2005 he went on to receiving a Golden Globe nomination for his leading role in “Hustle & Flow”. Incredibly gorgeous at 38 (born in 1969), Terrence’s revealed in October 2006 to In Style magazine how he maintains his good looks. It appears that Terrence is also a devotee of juicing. His antioxidant cocktail of choice is made of beets, carrots, celery, ginger and a little grape juice. He’s also not shy in using copious amounts of liquid gold (aka extra virgin olive oil) on his face, hair, hands and bath water to maintain a smooth and flawless complexion.

Terence Howard is my Celebrity Beauty Match Pick simply because he’s not afraid of taking extra care of his skin and health in his quest to age well.

Go bold, go bald!

iStock_boldandbald2.jpg
A large majority of men start losing their hair in their late twenties and by their mid-thirties a lot of men are partially bald … if not completely bald.

Abe Minkara, creator and self-confessed non-foam head shaver encourages Canadian men to go bold and go bald!

Organic Anti-Aging products

Lavere_serum.jpg
There are only a few lines of organic skincare lines on the market. Organic anti-aging products are even more of a rarity. If you have several allergic reactions to skincare products, then you’ll be happy to know that you can also take care of any of your anti-aging skincare concerns and continue to use an organic line.

Lavera NaturKosmetik has a full line of synthetic-free products for the face and body, but what caught our eye this week was their Laveré Lifting Serum Hydro-Gel. This lifting serum reduces fines lines around the mouth and eyes. The Laveré Lifting Serum Hydro-Gel is produced by incorporating a cocktail of plants, vitamins, bio-hyaluronic acid (essential a water reserve in the body that decreases with age), organic bamboo and organic green tea.

Erasing Scars with Cosmetic Surgery

In some cases, topical treatments and products just won’t get rid of more severe scars such as burns, deep cuts, keloids and extreme acne. Even though I’ve never felt the need to undergo cosmetic surgery to deal with my acne scars, I do know of a few friends who have felt the need to seek a more radical solution. I’ve been recently been made aware that you can actually remove your scars surgically. Not knowing too much about this option, I thought I’d ask a few questions.

If (severe) scars are the bane of your existence, you’ll be interested in what I found out:

Non-invasive treatment for scars

A few months ago, I was at the gym talking to Alicia, a gorgeous Canadian of Guyanese descent, about the aggravation of scars and darker skins. We are fairly close in skin complexion and we were discussing the hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation caused by scars. She asked me if my scars took a long time to heal. I agreed with her observation and told her about a scar I had on my right hand that took over a decade to disappear. The reality is that if you have a darker complexion, your scars take a much long time to heal than fairer complexions.

Until recently, I never really felt compelled to buy any products to correct the hyperpigmentation that followed scars or acne. Other than the severe case I mention in the previous paragraph, most of my scars faded away within one or two years. When I got seriously burnt after my first laser hair removal treatment a few years ago, I realized I really didn’t want to live 12 or 24 months with those kind of scars and hyperpigmentation.

Stop aging in its tracks with Botox®

Botox Cosmetic® injections are incredibly popular in North America. In fact, I’ve been told by a number of European skincare experts, that Botox has not reached the levels of popularity on the other side of the Atlantic as it has here in North America.

This might be because in Canada and in the United States, we are used to getting results NOW! Via Botox you can expect to see nearly all of your lines disappear within one week after your treatment. An added bonus is that most of your deeper furrows in your brow will be almost completely erased. The effects of Botox can last for four to six months.

I’ve come across many powerful serums and anti-aging creams, but none of them will give you real results within one week.

Since I’m one who will avoid needles at any cost, I’m sticking to the European approach of powerful serums and creams. That’s why I sat down with Norma Pasquale, cosmetic nurse at Pure Med Spa in Yorkville (Toronto), to get a better understanding why so many GenXers and BabyBoomers have chosen Botox injections as part of their skincare routine. Read more on my discussion with Norma in tomorrow’s post.

Botox® is botulinum, not botulism!

Further to my discussion with Norma Pasquale, cosmetic nurse at Pure Med Spa in Yorkville (Toronto), I found out an important nuance during our interview. She cautioned consumers not to confuse botulinum and botulism which are two completely different matters.

Here are some facts about botulinum versus botulism.

She also answered my question about the rumour that Botox was a toxic substance.

When used in exaggerated dosages, Botox can become lethal. Health Canada & the FDA in the United States regulate the safe dosage of Botox very carefully. Norma has informed me that a maximum of 100 units are used on a patient during one session and it would take 35,000 units injected intravenously for the substance to become dangerous.

What you might not know about Botox®

* Botox is a Canadian product that was developed in Vancouver by a pediatric ophthalmologist and ophthalmic geneticist by the name of Dr. Jean Carruther.

* Botox Cosmetic® injections are not only used for cosmetic purposes to seemingly eliminate wrinkles.

* Botox was approved in the nineties for medical purposes.

* Botox has been used to treat muscle disorders as well as neurological disorders.

* Botox can be helpful in cases where muscles have unusual twitches or ticks. By keeping the muscle from contracting, Botox can relieve the patient of these symptoms.

* Botox has also been reported to help in the treatment of migraine headaches.
